Before you arrive at your new home, we've put together all the FAQs we've been asked by students, from things you need to know before you move in, to what it's like living in London as a student.

 Before you arrive 

Is there an online induction and consent training for students?

Yes, there is an online induction and consent training module, which is mandatory for all students. It can be accessed through the LSE student accommodation system.

What is the purpose of the halls WhatsApp group?

The hall WhatsApp group is for residents to connect, network, and get to know each other before their arrival at Carr-Saunders Hall. You can meet your flatmates, and hear about the latest events from your Hall Committee. ResLife also runs a weekly Q&A bringing you the top events and info for you. 

Is there a student welcome page for new students at LSE?

Yes, LSE has a student welcome page that covers everything new students need to know, including enrollment, learning facilities, guides for PhD students, and dealing with homesickness.

Is there a pre-arrival checklist available for new students?

Yes, LSE has created a handy pre-arrival checklist to help new students plan their preparations.

What is the LSE Student Welcome Guide?

The LSE Student Welcome Guide contains important information for new students, which they will receive soon.

What bedding is provided in the rooms at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Carr-Saunders Hall provides pillows, mattress and mattress cover in the rooms. Students are responsible for bringing the rest of the bedding, such as bed sheets and towels.

Who are the team members at Carr-Saunders Hall?

The team includes Rosa (Senior Operations Manager), Vythehi and Zaina (Reception), Philip (Warden), and Ju (Residential Life Officer).

What can students expect from the residential services at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Students can expect a high standard of service and support, including 24-hour reception and security, warden and sub-warden assistance, a whole committee organizing events, and mental health support.

Who is part of the halls committee, and how can students join?

The halls committee is responsible for organizing events and fostering a sense of community. Students can join the committee and contribute to organizing events and activities within the hall. 

How often are the shared showers cleaned?

The shared showers are cleaned every day by the housekeeping staff.

Are students allowed to have a mini fridge in their room?

Yes, students are allowed to have a mini fridge in their room, and there is a charge of around £20 per term for this service.

Is there bike storage available at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Yes, there is bike storage available in the car park on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is a charge of around £15 for the whole year.

Are showers segregated by gender?

No, the showers at Carr-Saunders Hall are unisex.

Is there a guest policy for Carr-Saunders Hall?

In the first 14 days, guests are not allowed, but after that period, students can have guests staying for up to three days without the need for warden approval. Longer stays will require warden approval. You will need to sign in your guest at reception due to security safety. 

Is there a printing facility in the study room at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Yes, there is a printing, faxing, and scanning machine available in the computer room.

Is there a vacuum cleaner provided for students' use?

Yes, there is a vacuum cleaner available at reception for students to use.

How many power sockets are there per room at Carr-Saunders Hall?

The number of power sockets per room is not specified, but students generally have sufficient power sockets.

How does the laundry work at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Laundry facilities are coin-operated and managed through an app called Washstation. Students can download the app, top up their account, and access washing and drying cycles. The cost for one washing cycle is £2.80, and one drying cycle is £1.40.

Are irons provided in the rooms at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Yes, there are ironing boards and irons available in the laundry room for students to use.

Are students allowed to bring an air fryer into the kitchen?

The policy on bringing an air fryer into the kitchen is not clear. Students should inquire with Carr-Saunders Hall staff for a definitive answer.

Is there a policy regarding noise past a certain time at Carr-Saunders Hall?

Yes, there is a policy of general silence around 11 o'clock at night to ensure a peaceful environment for sleeping. However, students can continue socializing in the basement, respecting the neighbors and following the guidelines.

What mental health support is available for residents?

There is 24/7 mental health support through an online chat, WhatsApp, and phone call, provided by the partner Spectrum Life. You can also call the subwarden on call for in hall immediate support. 

What is "Halls Life"?

"Halls Life" is a brand new website packed with useful information for students, including packing tips, transportation to campus, and mental health support.

Is there any additional support available for students during their stay?

Yes, the Residential Life team and Wardens are available to provide additional support and assistance throughout the year. Students can reach out to them for any concerns or issues they may have.

Are LSE students automatically members of the Student Union?

Yes, LSE students are automatically members of the Students' Union and are encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities.

Is there a way to stay updated with LSE Residential Life events?

Yes, students can follow LSE Residential Life on Instagram (@lsereslife) to stay informed about events and activities. You will also receive a monthly ResLife What's On newsletter full of new events and tailored information.

 Living in London 

Where are the nearest supermarkets to Carr-Saunders Hall?

There are several supermarkets within walking distance of Carr-Saunders Hall, including Lidl, Tesco, and Sainsbury's.

Are there gyms near Carr-Saunders Hall?

Yes, there are several gyms near Carr-Saunders Hall, including the LSE gym, PureGym, and YMCA Club.

Are there part-time work opportunities available in the area?

Yes, there are plenty of part-time work opportunities in the area, including restaurants, bars, shops, and also on the LSE campus. The LSE Career Service and Students' Union can provide assistance with finding part-time work and financial support.
