Cracking the London Weather Code: Fashion Tips

By PaulineComms 07 Apr 2024

Embarking on a journey as an international student in London brings with it a multitude of exciting experiences and challenges. One such challenge that you've probably heard about (repeatedly) is London's notoriously unpredictable weather. From witnessing four seasons in a single day to navigating the chilly winds and occasional downpours, you will find that dressing appropriately becomes important. Rest assured - here are some valuable fashion tips to help you brave the elements and stay stylish during your time in this city!

Embrace the Art of Layering

London's climate can vary dramatically throughout the day, so mastering the art of layering is essential. While it may be freezing outdoors, most spaces are comfortably heated inside, prompting you to shed layers as you move from one place to another – unless you want to end up sweating indoors!! Invest in versatile pieces that you can easily add or remove as needed.

Comfortable Walking Shoes

With its sprawling streets and vibrant neighbourhoods, London is best explored on foot. Comfortable walking shoes are a must-have to navigate the city's bustling streets with ease. While you don't really need 100% waterproof shoes (unless you plan on trekking through heavy rain) opt for a sturdy (and smart!) pair of closed shoes.

Always Carry a Compact Umbrella

A small, foldable umbrella that fits snugly into your bag will prove to be a lifesaver on rainy days. I’ve often stepped out expecting a clear day, but been met with a sudden shower. Be prepared by always keeping this essential accessory handy - you won’t regret this investment!

Invest in a Waterproof Coat

A stylish waterproof coat with a hood is a versatile addition to your wardrobe. Opt for a timeless design that complements your personal style while providing protection from London's occasional downpours. A hood is a must!

Dare to Wear Colours

While Londoners are often seen sporting neutral tones, don't be afraid to inject some colour into your wardrobe. Bright hues can lift your spirits on gloomy days and add a refreshing touch to your ensemble. An interesting store to explore (bonus: it’s close to campus!) is PICKNWEIGHT - a unique concept store based on the idea of selling unique vintage & secondhand clothes by the kilo!

Fleece-Lined Leggings for Windy Days

Not only do they provide extra warmth, but they also make an excellent base layer under trousers, skirts, or dresses. These are deceptively warm and are a great way to sport some of your summer favourites throughout the year! Amazon and Primark have durable, affordable options.

Affordable Clothing Shops

The best and most sustainable option is always to try and find thrifted items - they're not only great & unique finds, but also a good way to contribute to a greener world! Additionally, London is scattered with several charity shops that have some wonderful clothing finds at reasonable prices- The Silk Road, Oxfam, and Barnardo's are great options! ✨ When you need a specific item besides these, and are searching for variety, quality, and affordability, my personal favourite in London has to be New Look | London
