Sustainability at LSE extends beyond teaching and research and into everyday student life ā including the food served in halls. Through thoughtful menu design, responsible sourcing and a strong focus on wellbeing, your catering team is working to ensure that eating in halls supports both people and the planet.
1. Menus of Change
The halls catering is guided by the Menus of Change initiative, an initiative aiming to reimagine the future of the foodservice industry.
The driving force for Menus of Change is to make delicious food as healthy and environmentally sustainable as possible, while also creating food industry business-friendly solutions to our most pressing environmental problems like climate change and water scarcity.
Some of LSE's Key commitments to align with menu's of change are:
- Put plants at the center (plant-forward).
- Draw from global, traditional diets
- Choose healthier, more sustainable animal products.
- Cut sodium; build flavor with herbs and aromatics.
- Feature fruits and vegetables everywhere.
- Be transparent about sourcing and ingredients.
- Reduce food and packaging waste.

2. Food for Life
Sustainability at LSE Food goes hand in hand with student wellbeing. Food for Life is a national initiative run by the Soil Association, setting a high standard for food quality, sustainability and ethics. To get this accreditation, caterers must meet strict criteria covering everything from nutrition to sourcing. Including
- Using fresh, seasonal ingredients
- Supporting local farmers and suppliers
- The ability to trace your meat back to the farm
- Reducing food waste
- Making sure meals are free from additives, colouring and sweeteners
- Offering healthy, balanced options for everyone
To sum it all up, it's a guarantee that the food you're eating is good for you, good for the planet and good for the people who produce it.

3. Sustainable Restaurant Association
For the sixth year in a row, we have been awarded the prestigious Three Star Food Made Good Sustainability Award by the Sustainable Restaurant Association. That's the top award for sustainability ā and it's all about how we're making choices that are good for people and the planet.
Here's how we smashed it this year...
š± Sourcing
We know that where our food comes from matters, and we're serious about making sure it's high-quality, fresh and sustainably sourced.
š„ Society
We don't just focus on the dish ā we care about the people eating it, making it and the community around us.
š Environment
We're always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact, from fighting food waste to recycling.
