Tip #1: Spend time alone
Starting off strong, this is my favorite self care tip. No one knows you like you know you. Spending time by yourself, especially in a new city, is a great way to learn more about yourself and how you like to spend your time. The more you explore London solo, you will notice how many others are doing the same! Some of my favorite solo activities so far include: taking myself on a ramen date, going to a record store gig at Rough Trade, and walking around Borough Market.
Tip #2: Join a society and/or seek out local community
No matter what you’re studying, consider joining a society where you can be yourself and have some fun. Even though I’m studying media & communication, I love to sing. I recently joined the chamber choir on campus as a way to continue my passion and meet other musicians at LSE.
Another great way to find a local community is by joining a faith group. If you are a member of a particular religious or spiritual practice, consider doing some research about where you can practice locally.
Tip #3: Take walks and spend time outdoors
Even though my hall, Butler's Wharf, is a 50 minute walk away from LSE, I find walking home from campus to be an amazing way to clear my head. Walking is a great way to stay healthy mentally and physically. In your travels around London, consider walking or biking as alternatives to public transport. They can be cheaper, and you never know what sights you may see along the way!

Tip #4: Take it slow
London is a HUGE city! If you’re anything like me, you have hundreds of “must-see London locations” saved on Instagram and Pinterest. However, we have lots of time. Take some time to get adjusted to LSE, your coursework, and navigating the city. Exploration will happen naturally over time.
Tip #5: Set boundaries
You’re not always going to be in a social mood, and that’s okay! Missing out on one night of drinking will not send your social life into doom and peril, I promise. As a sufferer of FOMO, I do find it challenging to turn down a social outing, but sometimes it feels so much better to watch your favorite show in bed and get a good night’s sleep.
Tip #6: Reward yourself
Treating yourself can come in so many shapes and forms. As pictured below, one of my more lavish treats to myself was a trip to The Dreamery in Islington, a wine bar that also serves amazing ice cream. Other days, I’ve treated myself by sleeping in late or watching a few episodes of a comfort show before bed. Get creative!
Wine and ice cream from The Dreamery. Highly recommend!
Tip #7: Call home
Though they may be far away, your friends and family from home are still here to support you. Don’t be ashamed to spend a night catching up with friends over video call or text. Whether I have a good or a bad day, I like to check in with my friends and family to stay connected.
Tip #8: Embrace the Adventure
As challenging as our studies may be, practicing gratitude is a great way to start and end your day with positivity. Studying in London, and at one of the best universities in the world, is the chance of a lifetime! Even if you feel homesick or have a tough day at school, you are on an amazing adventure and that’s something to be excited about!

Extra Tip #9: Use Your Resources
If you’re needing extra support, peer supporters are a great resource to talk to. If you live in halls, don’t hesitate to reach out to your warden or subwardens for some help. Wellbeing and counselling services are also available on campus. You are not alone, and asking for help is a great sign of strength!
