What to do if you aren't getting on with your flat

Posted 1 year ago

Sometimes things don't always go as you planned

There's always people you'll get along more with than others and it's important to take this into consideration at university. You'll be living with the same people for a year so it's definitely worth making an effort when it comes to bonding with your flatmates.

Here are some tips to making your time as a student a little easier if you don't get along with your flatmates.

1. Try to find common ground

Some people just aren't your cup of tea but this doesn't mean that you won't be able to find at least one thing in common. Whether you try chatting about your favourite movies, food, music or TikTok videos, there's bound to be something you can agree on.

If not, at least you have made the effort to try and find common interests. You never know, they might warm up to you after knowing that you're really trying!

2. Make friends elsewhere

Don't let your flatmates get you down or stop you from enjoying the time you have as a student. There are plenty of other places where you can make friends. Start by getting to know people on your course or join a society you're interested in.

3. Learn to enjoy alone time

If you find yourself spending a lot of time in your room to avoid running into your flatmates, it's a good idea to try and enjoy the time you have to yourself. Try spending more time on your hobbies, watching your favourite movies, being productive or try something new.

It might be beneficial to develop a self-care routine that suits you, whether that includes going out on a walk, reading, exercising, cooking a nice meal or pampering yourself. Make sure to look after yourself and spend time doing things you enjoy.

4. Don't hesitate to seek support

You might find that over time your flatmates will warm up to you but if you're still struggling to get along with them it's best to seek professional advice. Speak to your warden team, reception team, Peer Supporter, personal tutor or others that might be able to help.

Don't suffer in silence!
