Its a bit crazy for me to think about this, but I am writing this piece during my last week of classes at LSE. Time really does fly at LSE, it feels like just yesterday I was settling in. The past few months have been full of challenges, fun times, and a whole lot of growth. Here are some things I wish I knew when I was starting out as a postgraduate student at LSE!
New friends, new cultures, new age gaps ⭐️
If there is one thing you can count on at LSE, it’s meeting people and making friends from all over the world. Especially as a postgraduate student, get ready to connect with people across a wide range of age groups. Whether they’re your age, younger, or older, you’ll meet people who are very different from you, and that’s a good thing. If there’s one piece of wisdom I can give here, it's to take the time to learn from the experiences of people surrounding you! Age really is just a number!
Don’t miss out on events 📅
Go to events. Seriously, just go. Whether it's something happening in your hall or at LSE in general, get out there. These events are a key part of what makes the LSE experience so special. They are also great opportunities to network with professionals and alumni, make new friends, or simply connect with people who share your interests. There is always something going on, so don't miss out! On that note, LSE Reslife organizes plenty of great events during the term, so make sure to check them out on the website and don't forget to sign up :)
Take care of yourself 🌸
It’s easy to come into LSE with romanticized expectations, and to be fair, my time at LSE has lived up to (and exceeded) these expectations. However, as with any experience, some days can be harder than others, and some challenges you may not expect. From my experience, and I know other people have shared this, imposter syndrome + homesickness were strong in my first few months. Your colleagues at LSE will for sure impress you, but you must remember that you’re here for a reason too. Although this was not on my bucket list for 2024, I’ve grown and learnt a lot from this experience. If you need help, please please please reach out. Personally, booking office hours helped me a lot, and so did chatting with my colleagues, who often found this very relatable
On a final note, make the most of this year, enjoy it, and learn as much as you can! It’s a short program, and it will be over before you know it. Say yes to new experiences and embrace everything that comes your way!
