Hedgehog Awareness Week

Helping and protecting wildlife

Hedgehogs are an essential part of British Wildlife; however, they are one of the most threatened species due to habitat loss and lack of food. LSE takes part in hedgehog awareness week to show the importance of learning more and protecting these adorable animals.

What is Hedgehog Awareness Week?

It promotes the protection and conservation of hedgehogs in their natural habitats, while highlighting the importance of biodiversity on campus and beyond. The week also provides an opportunity for students to get involved with conservation projects and attend talks educating the importance of hedgehogs and the threats they face. Check out this student's article on their experience with LSE Sustainability Hedgehog Volunteering Day.

Why are hedgehogs so important?

They are vital natural pest controllers that consume large amounts of snails, slugs and beetles, protecting plants without chemicals (a gardener's best friend). They're also a critical indicator of our enrionvments health, with their population levels decreasing, it reflects the poor health of the ecosystem. Despite their benefits, hedgehogs face numerous threats that have led to their decrease:

  • Habitat Loss: Gardens fenced off without consideration for wildlife corridors restrict their access to food and shelter.
  • Road Accidents: Traffic poses a significant danger to hedgehogs, particularly where their natural habitats are intersected by busy roads.
  • Pesticides and Poisoning: While hedgehogs help control pests naturally, they are susceptible to poisoning from pesticides used on gardens. Ingesting contaminated pests can lead to fatal outcomes for these small creatures.
