Why Joining my WhatsApp Community was Essential

A great way to get adjusted to university & halls life!

Joining university and a new home environment can, of course, be overwhelming, so to ease this transition, joining your specific Halls' WhatsApp Community is a fantastic way to get acclimatised in the weeks leading up to your move-in day & Freshers Week. 

Think of your WhatsApp Community as an excellent information hub, for a wealth of handy links & current updates from both your knowledgeable ResLife & Wardens Team, & even your fellow Halls students (through the group chat). 

1: Announcements

📣 Never miss the important updates! 📣

The announcements channel became my go-to for important news, job opportunities, socials (including pub quiz nights!) & critical reminders from reception, such as move-out days, hall-specific giveaways, and general housekeeping updates.

This is especially great if you're someone who feels overwhelmed by a barrage of university emails.

Because WhatsApp was linked to both my phone and my laptop (compatible across all types of devices), these updates were easily accessible wherever I was and whenever I was making my way back to Passfield.

2: The Halls Group Chat 

For direct community communication! 🙌

Joining the group chat gave me the chance to get to know other incoming students before I'd even set foot on campus. This was a great comfort, as a few messages back and forth, and suddenly I already had a friendly face to look out for on move-in day. The chat itself is also a useful space to seek communal answers for questions from other students.  

Beyond the introductions, this was also where the weekly catered menu was shared, along with hall-specific activities like painting sessions, movie nights, Sunday morning bagels, letter-writing evenings alongside impromptu ice cream socials.

3: Practical Support & Useful Contacts 

A reassuring safety net! 💫

What is super helpful is having somewhere to turn for the everyday questions that don't always have an obvious, straightforward answer.

Not sure how the laundry room card system works? Someone's already asked.

Wondering where the nearest supermarket or pharmacy is? A fellow resident or ResLife Moderator has probably posted a recommendation, or a reminder e.g. to sign up to our local GP.

Even the small logistical hiccups, a Wi-Fi outage, a parcel that's gone missing, a maintenance request you're not sure how to file felt far less stressful knowing there was a whole community of people who'd either faced the same thing or knew exactly who to ask or how to be directed to a group chat to message support directly.
