The importance of connecting with your flatmates
Starting university is an exciting experience and halls is one of the first places where the beginning of your student journey starts taking shape. Your hall is not just a place to sleep; it's a community, a hub of diverse individuals.
Not sure where to start? We've put together our top 7 tips for you.
- Break the ice - Remember, everyone is in the same boat as you - new and looking to make friends. So, don't hesitate to initiate conversations. Start with a simple "hello" or "you alright?" - very British we know, we know :). Small talk can lead to big connections.
- Attend hall events - Your Subwardens and Hall Committee will organise many events to help all residents to get to know each other. Join them to meet new people in a relaxed and friendly setting.
- Be open-minded - At LSE you will encounter people from diverse backgrounds and interests. Keep an open mind and engage with people that have different perspectives and experiences. It's a chance for personal growth and understanding.
- Join clubs and societies at LSE - LSESU has a variety of sports clubs or societies. There's something for everyone. Find a few that align with your passions and hobbies. Why not see who else in your hall has joined?
- Be a good neighbour - Respect your flatmates and their need for quiet study time, relaxation or sleep. Being considerate of others fosters a positive atmosphere in the hall, making it more likely for students to reach out and connect with you.
- Offer help and seek help - If you're good at a particular subject, why not offer your assistance? Likewise, don't hesitate to ask for help when you need it. Use your hall's WhatsApp group chat and find students in your hall studying the same course.
- Stay patient - Building meaningful connections takes time. Don't get discouraged if your first attempts at making friends don't immediately result in deep connections. Be patient and persistent in your efforts.
