Hi, I'm Chau Le, a final year student at the LSE, and I have lived in halls for my whole 3 years of university. Living in halls of residence at LSE can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it can also have its challenges. Here are my top 10 must-know tips for making the most of your time in halls:
Tip 1: Get to know your flatmates.
Living with other people can be great, but it can also be challenging if you don't get along. Take the time to get to know your flatmates, find out what you have in common, and make an effort to be friendly and respectful. This will help create a positive living environment for everyone. During my time at Sidney Web House, the decision to create a Whatsapp group was definitely one of the best decisions we made. While it is true that we lived just a few doors away from each other, having the flexibility to just text in the group to ask if anyone wants to go out for dinner, or want to go down to the laundry room together, just allowed us to really create a great atmosphere for all of us and deepen our relationship!
Tip 2: Set boundaries.
It's important to have your own space and time to study, relax, or just be alone. Make sure to communicate your needs and boundaries with your flatmates and respect theirs as well.
Tip 3: Get involved in hall life.
Many halls of residence have a variety of social and sporting activities going on, so get involved and meet new people. It's a great way to make friends and have fun outside of your studies.
Tip 4: Keep your room clean and tidy.
It's important to keep your living space clean and organized, not only for your own health and well-being but also to respect your flatmates. Set aside time each week to do some basic cleaning and tidying up.
Tip 5: Be mindful of noise levels.
Remember that you are sharing your living space with others, and be mindful of noise levels at all times. This is especially important late at night or early in the morning when people may be trying to sleep.
Tip 6: Make use of communal spaces.
Most halls of residence have communal kitchens and living areas, so make use of these spaces to socialize and cook meals with your flatmates. It's a great way to save money and bond with your flatmates.
Tip 7: Take advantage of free events and activities.
LSE and the surrounding area offer a wide range of events and activities that are often free or discounted for students. Keep an eye out for flyers and emails promoting these opportunities, and take advantage of them to explore the city and try new things.
Tip 8: Don't be afraid to ask for help.
If you're struggling with anything, whether it's your studies, your personal life, or your living situation, don't be afraid to ask for help. LSE has a range of support services available to students, including counselling, academic support, and financial assistance.
Tip 9: Plan ahead for meals.
It's easy to fall into the trap of eating takeaway or microwave meals all the time when you're living in halls, but it's not the healthiest or most cost-effective option. Plan ahead and do some bulk cooking or meal prep to save money and eat healthier.
Tip 10: Enjoy your time in the halls.
Living in halls is a unique and memorable experience, so make the most of it. Take advantage of the social and academic opportunities available, and don't be afraid to try new things.
I hope these tips will help make your experience living in halls at the LSE a positive and enjoyable one. Good luck with your studies!
