LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration that occurs throughout February in the UK. It’s a time to reflect on and celebrate the lives and achievements of the LGBT+ community, while also acknowledging the struggles they’ve faced in their journey for equality and recognition.
LGBT+ History Month started in the UK in 2005 and is celebrated every February. It’s a chance to learn about the often-overlooked and hidden stories of the LGBT+ community. From the fight against laws like Section 28, which prevented schools from teaching about homosexuality, to the vibrant cultural contributions of queer communities across the globe, LGBT+ History Month makes space for queer histories that have often been silenced or ignored.
Each year has a new theme, often reflecting a significant issue in LGBT+ history or culture. This year's theme, Science and Innovation, explores how advancements in data and technology can help the community take steps toward a better future for all.
You'll have tonnes of opportunities to engage with LGBT+ History Month, whether on campus or in the wider London community. Here’s a quick rundown of ways you can join in:
1. Attend Campus Events - Keep an eye on our events page in February, as well as events across LSE, for in-person events - there are tickets available for the guided tour of the Tate Modern, get yours before they sell out!
2. Check out LGBT+ student life - Here on Halls Life, we already have a bunch of great articles if you want to learn more about the LGBTQ+ community at LSE. Everything from student blogs to, to book recommendations and queer-friendly spots in the city.
3. Explore LSE’s LGBT+ archives - LSE holds a number of LGBT+ historical collections, which you can explore at the LSE Library. These archives provide fascinating insights into the early LGBT+ rights movements, including the Gay Liberation Front’s efforts that began at LSE in the 1970s.
4. Support local LGBT+ businesses & events - London has plenty of LGBT+ owned businesses and queer-led events. The British Library often runs special events for LGBT+ History Month, as well as exhibitions focusing on LGBT+ authors, activists, and cultural icons. Checking out these external events and businesses is a great way to broaden your understanding and support the community.
LGBT+ History Month is a reminder that while progress has been made, there’s still lots of continual work to be done. This month is a call to reflect on the struggles for equality, celebrate the victories, and support the ongoing fight for the rights and dignity of LGBT+ people.
