Getting to the airport during the winter break

Posted 1 day ago

Ensure a smooth journey home during the festive period

As term winds down and deadlines ease off, lots of you will be heading out of London for the winter break. Whether you are flying home, off on a city break, or just escaping to somewhere with fewer readings, here is a guide to help you get from LSE halls to the airport without any last-minute stress.

Before you go: quick checklist

Try to sort these bits a few days before you travel:

  • Check your airport and terminal on your booking. London has multiple airports, and some airlines use different terminals depending on the day or flight.
  • Plan your route and timing using TFL Journey Planner or Citymapper. Aim to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before short-haul flights 3 hours before long-haul flights
  • Think about luggage. If you are taking big suitcases, avoid too many changes and stairs if you can.
  • Have a backup route in mind in case of delays or strikes, especially if you are travelling early in the morning or late at night.

We recommend downloading Citymapper app and planning your route to the airport ahead of time (Pro tip: you can save your journey offline).

PSA

Sometimes you'll want the fastest route, but that will usually be the most expensive too... Always do your research, assess your options and find the one that's best for you! Our recommendations below might not necessarily be the best ones for your specific winter travels, so make sure to compare them with other routes when you're researching.

From Bankside House

For travel options from where you are to the hall, see: Bankside House on Google Maps.

  1. Walk from Bankside House to Southwark Underground Station

  2. Tube from Southwark to Paddington
At Southwark, head down to the London Underground (Tube) and travel to London Paddington Station (following your original route logic, this is via the same line change you’d use in reverse).

  3. Train from Paddington to Heathrow
Once you arrive at Paddington, follow the signs for Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect services. Or we would recommend the Elizabeth line if you aren't pushed for time, as it is a much cheaper option from Paddington.
