Getting to Southend

Getting to Southend is quite straightforward, especially if you stay at Lilian Knowles House. Two main train services will take you there:

  • C2C: Fenchurch Street to Southend Central
  • Greater Anglia: Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria

The journey time ranges from about 50 minutes to an hour, making it ideal for a day trip. With a railcard, a return ticket costs between £13.40 and £15.25. Once you’ve arrived, it’s a short walk to Southend’s main attractions along the seafront.

Exploring Southend-on-Sea

📍Southend Pier and Railway

Southend Pier is the town’s iconic landmark, stretching over a mile into the Thames Estuary, making it the longest pleasure pier in the world. The railway ride along the pier offers stunning views of the coastline and is a relaxing start to your visit.

Southend Pier admission prices and opening times

  • Opening times: Wednesday to Sunday from 10:15 am to 5 pm (Last entry to the pier is one hour before closing.)
  • Admission: £4 for a return train ticket along the pier (Remember to bring your student ID!)
  • Train schedule: Departures every half hour; from shore at the hour and half-hour, and from the Pier Head at quarter to and past the hour

📍Southend Pier Museum

The museum showcases an original 1890s Toastrack tram, three train carriages from 1949, and a working signal box. You’ll also find fascinating pictorial displays, classic "just for fun" penny slot machines, and plenty more.

📍Southend-on-Sea Seafront

The seafront is where Southend really comes alive. Alongside beautiful beaches and plenty of spots to sit and relax, you’ll find perfect viewpoints for photos, especially of the pier train.

📍Adventure Island

Adventure Island is a thrilling amusement park that offers fun for all ages. With everything from roller coasters to more relaxed attractions like the carousel and the big wheel, it’s easy to spend a few hours here. Entry to the park is free, and you only pay if you want to go on the rides and attractions. For those planning to visit multiple times, an annual pass can be a good deal.

🎆 Seafront Fireworks
