Making your kitchen safe and enjoyable
The Student Accommodation Code is there to protect your rights to a safe, good quality place to live.
These are the guidelines that ensure your kitchen remains safe and healthy to use.
- Do not store food or utensils on the surface - use cupboards. Items stored on surfaces will be disposed of.
- Wash utensils and put them away. Dirty utensils can end up being removed.
- Put rubbish in the correct recycling bins provided.
- Keep the kitchen clean or it will attract mice and insects.
- Don't put cooking oil, fat or any food down the sink as this could cause blockages.
- Don't take food, drink or utensils that don't belong to you.
- Don't switch off the fridge or freezer.
- Keep the kitchen doors shut - they are fire doors.
- When cooking never leave anything unattended.
- Turn off at the wall after use.
- Never put metallic objects in the microwave.
- Don't cover the ventilation slots.
- Clean the microwave after use.
- Turn off at the wall after use.
- Only use the number of hobs you require to prevent overheating.
- Don't close the door while using the grill as your food could catch fire.
- Use a baking tray as putting food directly on the oven shelf could cause it to catch fire.
- Turn off at the wall after use.
- Don't use for any purpose other than boiling water.
- Don't switch off the fridge or freezer.
- All out of date, rotten and un-wrapped food will be disposed of.
- Turn off at the wall after use.
- Don't leave unattended.
- The electrical fuses in the kitchen are sensitive and, while protecting life, can trip.
- Inform reception immediately if sockets are not working so they can be re-set.
- The most common cause of a tripped fuse is an unsafe or incompatible appliance so try to avoid using your own equipment in kitchens.
- Do not overload electrical sockets as this can result in fire.
- Multi-way 'cube' adapters are forbidden.
- UK voltage is 240V. If you own items that aren't compatible with this you must buy a voltage adapter otherwise you could trip the fuses.
- Public kitchens and areas in most Halls are cleaned daily or weekly.
- Refuse and recycling is collected from public kitchens daily.
- Students are responsible for cleaning their own rooms and putting their refuse in the appropriate place.
- Please recycle- put things in the correct bins.
The use of these items constitutes a serious fire risk and will be dealt with as a disciplinary matter:
- Deep fat friers.
- Candles.
- Night-lights (including fairy-lights).
- Joss sticks.
- Any naked flames.
- Flammable materials such as charcoal.
