Before you arrive at your new home, we've put together all the FAQs we've been asked by students, from things you need to know before you move in, to what it's like living in London as a student.

 Before you arrive 

Can I know who my flatmates are before arrival?

No, due to UK GDPR laws, we are unable to share information about flatmates before arrival. You will meet them upon your arrival.

Is there a halls WhatsApp group for High Holborn Residence?

Yes, there is a halls WhatsApp group where you can connect with fellow students in High Holborn Residence. You can share ideas, tips, and engage in friendly conversations with other students. The group is for residents only, and any form of abuse or discrimination is not allowed. More information will be provided soon. 

Can I arrive early at High Holborn Residence?

Early arrivals are possible, but you need to contact the vacation team for booking availability.

What do I need to bring for bedding?

Students need to bring their own bed sheets and covers. Pillows, pillow covers, and mattresses are provided in the rooms.

Can I ship my belongings early before arrival?

It is recommended to bring your belongings when you arrive. If you have special circumstances, you can contact the residence team for advice.

What should international students bring to London?

Most essentials can be purchased locally, but consider setting up a bank account and securing necessary deliveries before arrival. Use the Citymapper app for easy navigation.

Who are the members of the halls team?

The halls team includes Stephane, the Operational Manager; Imran, the Warden; and Iqbal, the Residential Life Officer.

What support services are available at High Holborn Residence?

High Holborn Residence offers support services for accommodation-related queries, maintenance issues, pastoral care, and student welfare. The Front of House team can provide assistance and direct students to the appropriate resources.

Is there a sense of community at High Holborn Residence?

Yes, community building is important at High Holborn Residence, and 87% of last year's students felt a sense of community. The halls aim to provide a welcoming environment where students can form friendships and support each other.

Are there facilities available in High Holborn Residence?

High Holborn Residence offers various facilities, including a common room, study spaces, a computer room, laundry facilities, and a makeshift gym.

Do students recommend living at High Holborn Residence?

Is this a global community of students?

What is the Hall Committee, and what do they do?

The Hall Committee is made up of students living in High Holborn Residence. They work together to represent the students' interests, organize events, and improve the halls' facilities and community.

Are mini-fridges allowed in the rooms, and is there a charge?

You cannot bring a mini fridge to High Holborn Residence. 

Are there gym facilities available in High Holborn Residence?

High Holborn Residence offers basic gym equipment, such as weights. However, for more comprehensive gym facilities, there is a leisure center next door, as well as several membership gyms nearby, including the student gym at LSE.

What are the laundry facilities and costs?

High Holborn Residence uses an app system called Wash Station for laundry. Washing costs about £2.80, and drying costs approximately £1.40.

What communal facilities are available, and how often are they cleaned?

Kitchens are cleaned once a week, while shared bathrooms are cleaned daily from Monday to Friday. For rooms, students are responsible for their own cleaning.

Is smoking allowed at High Holborn Residence?

Smoking, including e-cigarettes, is prohibited inside the building. Smoking should be done outside and away from the building.

Who should I contact for specific accommodation payment and documentation questions?

For specific questions regarding accommodation payments and documentation, you can email accommodation@lse.ac.uk for assistance.

What devices are allowed in the rooms? Can I have a kettle and a rice cooker?

You can have a rice cooker, but it must be used in the kitchen, not in your room. Personal kettles are allowed in the kitchen but not in the rooms.

Is there a guest policy at High Holborn Residence?

Yes, you are allowed to have day guests until 11:00 PM and one night guest for up to three nights within a fortnightly period. For stays longer than three days, you will require the Warden's permission.

Are there any restrictions on decorations in the room?

Battery-powered string lights are allowed, but avoid using anything that plugs in, as it may cause safety issues.

Are there any female-only flats available?

Yes, if you prefer a female-only flat due to personal or religious reasons, you can request it during the accommodation process.

How do I access Wi-Fi at High Holborn Residence?

The Wi-Fi is fast and reliable. Use the eduroam network, which is the same as on the LSE campus, for seamless connectivity.

What should I do if I lose my room key?

Inform reception immediately if you lose your key. You will be provided with a temporary key while searching for the original. Lost keys incur replacement fees.

 Living in halls 

How can I access the Halls Life website?

The Halls Life website contains valuable information, such as what to pack for halls, transportation to campus, and mental health support. You can access it by clicking the provided link and save it as a bookmark for future reference.

What cooking facilities are available in the kitchens?

The kitchens are fully furnished with ovens, kettles, and microwaves. Students will also find some basic kitchen cooking facilities, and they can bring their own plates and utensils.

Is there 24/7 mental health support available?

Yes, LSE provides 24/7 mental health support to students. If you have any mental health concerns, you can reach out to the appropriate services for assistance. We have a Warden and Subwarden team in halls that are available each evening. 

How do I get to campus from High Holborn Residence?

Walking is the easiest route, which takes about 10-15 minutes. There are also buses available to High Holborn station, followed by a short walk.

How can I contact the High Holborn Residence team with further questions?

 Living in London 

Where can I do my grocery shopping in the local area?

The High Holborn Residence is located in Covent Garden, which offers various grocery stores, including Co-op, Tesco, Sainsbury's, and Little. There are also numerous coffee shops and restaurants in the area.

What support is available for students facing increased living costs?

LSE offers scholarships and financial support, including hardship funds, to help students facing increased living costs.

What are the cell phone options for international students in the UK?

Cell phone data plans are reasonably priced in the UK. Search for deals from different providers, and consider the international SIM card provided in your welcome pack. Similarly, research options for opening a bank account virtually before arriving in the UK.
