Navigating the London Underground, or the "Tube," can seem a bit overwhelming at first, but with a few handy tips, you’ll be a pro in no time! Whether you’re heading to lectures, exploring the city, or meeting friends, here’s everything you need to know to make your tube journeys smooth and stress-free.
1. Tap in, tap out
Gone are the days when you needed an Oyster card to travel around London. Now the easiest way to pay for your Tube journeys is by using your contactless debit/credit card, or even your smartphone. Just tap your card or phone on the yellow reader at the start and end of your journey.
- Remember to always tap out: It’s important to tap in when you start your journey and tap out when you leave the station. This ensures you’re charged the correct fare. If you forget to tap out, you could be charged the maximum fare for your journey.
- Overpay? No problem: If you think you’ve been overcharged, don’t worry! You can apply for a refund through the Transport for London (TFL) website. For more details on how to check and claim a refund, visit the TFL refunds page.
- You can change your mind: If you tap in and decide last minute not to travel, you can tap out at the same station within a short period, and it will cancel your journey. This means you won’t be charged for that trip!
2. Use Citymapper to plan your journey
Navigating the tube network can be tricky, especially if you’re new to the city or if there are any service disruptions. That’s where the Citymapper app comes in handy! It’s the ultimate tool for getting around London with ease.
- Plan your route: Citymapper will help you find the quickest route to your destination, whether you’re travelling by Tube, bus, or even bike. It shows real-time information on delays, alternative routes, and travel times.
- Download Citymapper: You can download Citymapper for free on both Android and iOS devices. It’s a must-have for any student living in London!
3. Bonus tips
To make your journey even smoother, here are some additional tips that every Londoner knows (but you might not):
- Stand on the right: When using escalators in tube stations, always stand on the right side to allow people in a hurry to walk up or down on the left. It’s an unspoken rule in London, and following it will help keep the flow moving smoothly.
- Avoid rush hour if possible: The tube can get extremely crowded during rush hours, typically between 7:30 - 9:30 and 17:00 - 19:00 on weekdays. If you can, try to travel outside these times to avoid the busiest periods and enjoy a less stressful journey.
- Keep left in corridors and on stairs: Opposite to the escalator rule, it’s a good idea to keep to the left in corridors and on stairs. This helps everyone move more efficiently through the station.
- Mind the gap: Always “mind the gap” between the train and the platform edge when boarding and alighting. Some platforms are curved, and the gap can be wider than expected!
- Have your payment ready: To avoid holding up the line at the gates, have your card or phone ready to tap in or out. It’s a simple tip that keeps everyone moving quickly.
- Respect personal space: The Tube can get cramped, especially during busy times. Keep your belongings close and respect others’ personal space to make the journey more comfortable for everyone.
- Use the whole platform: When waiting for a train, walk down the platform to avoid the crowds near the entrance. Trains tend to be less crowded further along, making it easier to find a seat or a bit of breathing space.
