London, one of the most diverse megacities in the world, is a melting pot of different cultures. From art and music to literature and performance, Black culture radiates creativity and influence across every medium. Although Black history deserves to be recognised every month, Black History Month offers a timely opportunity to explore the richness of Black culture, and encourage us to keep that celebration alive year-round.
Here are our most recommended ways to celebrate Black History Month in London on a student budget!
1. Free African Heritage Tours
Just beyond the doorstep of Bankside House at Tate Modern, you can access volunteer-led tours exploring artworks relating to African and Caribbean Heritage and history at Tate Modern. Check out the Tate Modern Website for exact timings of the tours for the remainder of October.
Can't make it to a tour? No problem, you can still visit the Nigerian Modernism exhibit that's on until May next year. 16-25 year olds are eligible for the free Tate Collective membership that grants you £5 (instead of £18) tickets! Just sign up here if you don't already have it.
2. Historical & Hidden Caribbean
Not a fan of modern art? We have you covered. The V&A's exhibit "Historical & Hidden Caribbean" in South Kensington showcases "the pursuit for freedom, the challenges of migration, the movement of people and the impact of creolisation" through art and design. You can go on a free tour on the last Sunday of each month until December 28, 2025 (that's the 26th of October for those of you who want to go for Black History Month.)
No sign up needed, just show up at the meeting point (Cromwell Road foyer, V&A South Kensington) for the hour-long tour to begin at 15:30.
3. Black British Book Festival 2025
After a massive success last year, the Black British Book Festival is back at the Barbican to celebrate emerging black talent, showcase iconic black voices and place Black British authors right at centre stage. For just £15, you access one headline event of your choice and workshops to your heart's content.

4. Classically Black
Back for its second year, "Classically Black: A Cultural Movement in the Making" is taking place Saturday the 18th of October at Kings Place near Angel to redefining what classical music looks and sounds like today. Rooted in Black experiences, this groundbreaking programme brings together world-class musicians for a musical celebration that blends tradition with transformation.
Under 30s get tickets just £10 which you can book here.
5. Black History Walks
This iconic organisation runs guided walking tours across London focused on including its African history which goes back 3500 years. Aside from walks, they also do films, talks and workshops throughout the year. Have a nosy on their Eventbrite page to see what they have coming up in October through to November!
