No Gym, No Problem: Staying Active in London

The Budget Student's Guide to Moving in London

London gym memberships cost anywhere between Β£50–£100 a month. I found that out, laughed, and closed the tab. If you're anything like me, "self-care" has to coexist with a budget that also needs to cover rent, groceries, and the occasional overpriced coffee that you absolutely did not need.

We've already covered the best indoor sports to try this winter, but what about when you actually want to go outside, or just can't justify spending Β£20 on a single yoga class? Good news: London is one of the best cities in the world to stay active for free. You just have to know where to look.

Here's your no-faff guide.

Ways to Stay Active in London (Without Draining Your Bank Account) πŸƒπŸ§˜

Parkrun

πŸ“ Multiple locations across London | Every Saturday, 9am | Free

The classic. A timed 5K in your local park, every Saturday morning, completely free. Register once online, print a barcode, show up. There are 20+ locations across London such as Brockwell Park, Victoria Park, Bushy Park, and more. No pressure, no pace requirement, everyone from serious runners to people walking with dogs.

Nike Run Club

πŸ“ Various London locations | Weekly | Free

Free guided group runs across the city, led by coaches, a few times a week. Routes vary in distance and pace. You don't need to buy a single Nike product to show up, I've tested this!

GoodGym

πŸ“ Borough groups across London | Various times | Free or low cost

GoodGym combines running with doing good, you run to a community task (gardening, moving furniture for elderly residents, etc.) and run back. It sounds niche but it's one of the most feel-good things I've come across. Free to join group runs, with an optional Β£9.95/month membership for solo missions.

November Project London

πŸ“ Various locations | Wed & Fri mornings | Free

Outdoor workouts, stairs, hills, running, bodyweight circuits, twice a week, for free. The energy is absurdly good for 6:30am. Highly recommend if you want to feel alive before your 9am lecture.

Council Leisure Centres

πŸ“ Various boroughs | From ~Β£3–6 per class

Criminally underrated. Better (formerly GLL) and Everyone Active run yoga, pilates, HIIT, spin, and more at council leisure centres across London, often for Β£3–6 pay-as-you-go. The Lambeth and Southwark centres near campus are well-equipped and genuinely good quality. Nobody talks about this enough.

A Few Final Tips

  • Use your parks. Hyde Park, Hampstead Heath, Victoria Park and more are stunning in the early morning before the crowds. Also forces you out of bed, which is half the battle.
  • Check your student union. LSE Students' Union often has subsidised fitness classes and sports clubs. Check before paying for anything external.
  • Follow local studios on Instagram. Pop-up classes and last-minute spots get posted to stories and disappear within hours.

London wants you to think staying active is expensive. It really, genuinely isn't. Some of the best perks of living in this city like the parks, the people, the energy are completely free. Whether you find your Saturday morning parkrun crew or your regular yoga spot, there's a community here waiting for you. You just have to show up.
