Switch on dates and what to expect

It’s officially that time of year again when London transforms into a giant festive fairy-light display. Whether you’re escaping revision stress or just fancy an evening wander with friends, the city’s Christmas lights are an easy (and free!) way to get into the festive spirit. Here are all the details you need to know.

Oxford Street

Oxford Street Christmas lights

Switch-on date: On now! (Monday 3 November)

What to expect: The display features 5,000 stars and ~300,000 LED bulbs, in partnership with the charity Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity (GOSH Charity).

Why go: It’s the big West End high-street spectacle. Easy to reach from LSE, full of buzz, shopping and festive photos.

Carnaby Street (Soho)

Switch-on date: Thursday 6 November

What to expect: Slightly more quirky and colourful than the big ultra-mainstream streets; good for something a bit different.

Why go: Close to many student hotspots, great for a festive walk and can grab a drink afterwards.

Regent Street

Regent Street Christmas lights

Switch-on date: Thursday 6 November

What’s to expect: The well-known angels display (large illuminated angel figures) stretches across Regent Street and the neighbouring St James’s / Piccadilly corridor.

Why go: Regent Street runs through the heart of central London, from Oxford Circus down toward Piccadilly and St James’s. It’s one of the major thoroughfares, so the lights here are big, bold and hard to miss.

Covent Garden

Switch-on date: Wednesday 12 November

What to expect: A giant British-grown Christmas tree (approx 55 ft) plus over 300,000 lights around the area.

Why go: Lovely after lectures or as part of a group hangout. You get lights, cosy cafés and maybe a mulled wine.

Trafalgar Square

Trafalgar Square Christmas lights

Switch-on details: Thursday 4 December

What’s to expect: The tree is a gift from Norway and has been a tradition since 1947. After the switch-on, you’ll still be able to go and see it through December until early January.

Why go: Trafalgar Square sits just a short walk from many student hang-outs and central London stations. It has a great festive atmosphere!

So make a night of it, take a few photos, and remember: deadlines can wait, but Christmas lights don’t stay up forever. 🎄
