Keep yourself safe in the city with these tips

We want you to have the best time at LSE, which means it's important to look after yourself during your time with us. Like moving to any major city, you should always be aware of your personal safety in London.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe while making the most of student life in the capital.

When you're out and about

As one of the UK's busiest cities, London can be overwhelming, but keeping an eye on your environment is the simplest and most effective ways to stay safe.

  • Stick to well-lit areas if you're walking at night
  • Avoid cutting through alleyways or parks after dark
  • If something doesn't feel right, trust your instincts and take a different route
  • Try avoid using your mobile phone or headphones, especially when walking alone
  • Don't carry too much cash on you and if you have to withdraw money always hide your PIN
  • Turn on 'Find My iPhone' or similar tracking apps that allow you to locate your phone if it goes missing. If possible turn on the 'Remote Wipe' feature. It allows you to erase all the data on your iPhone remotely if it’s lost or stolen.
When you're travelling alone

Exploring the city is a part of student life, but it's worth taking a few precautions when you head out solo.

  • Let a friend know where you're going and when you expect to be back
  • Carry a portable phone charger so you don't get stranded without battery
  • Share your journey using apps like Citymapper, Uber or Google Maps
When you use public transport

London's public transport system is one of the easiest ways to get around from the overground and underground to local buses, but it's good to know how to use it wisely.

  • Late at night, sit in carriages with other people or near the driver on buses
  • Avoid falling asleep on night buses or trains if you are travelling alone
  • Keep an eye on your belongings, especially when it's crowded
When you have personal belongings with you

Unfortunately things like phone theft and pickpocketing are common in busy areas of big cities, but a few small habits can make a big difference.

  • Keep your valuables (wallets, phones etc.) zipped away when you're walking
  • Don't leave your belongings, like your bag, unattended or open anywhere
  • Use a cross-body bag or backpack worn on your front in crowded spaces
  • If you are using a bike of your own, make sure to take precautions to keep it safe. Use a D-lock and ensure the lock has a good security certification.
When you're on a night out

Nights out, whether you're drinking or not, are a big part of uni life. Plan ahead and look after each other while you're out to make sure the fun doesn't end badly.

  • Stick with friends and don't leave anyone behind, if someone has had too much to drink help them get home safely
  • Don't leave your drinks unattended and watch them at all times – if you feel unwell or think you may have been spiked, tell bar staff or a friend immediately
  • Know your limits – eat before you drink alcohol, pace yourself and drink plenty of water
  • Plan your journey home before you head out
  • If you get a taxi home, book through a licensed app or black cab

Feel more confident in the city with these simple yet effective safety tips, and always remember to look out for each other.
