Making recycling easy

Posted 6 months ago

Take time and recycle!

Recycling can be confusing if you don’t know your way around, especially if you're new to the area! But, once you know, it’s easy to get the hang of it. If you can’t find the answer on this page, have a look at our more detailed guide here.

What can be recycled?

First things first, let's get familiar with what goes in each bin.

Here's a rundown of the items you should be disposing of in each:

1. Mixed recycling

Anything that goes in this bin needs to be clean AND empty.

  • Plastic bottles, pots and tubs
  • Paper and cardboard
  • Glass
  • Drink cans and tins
  • Drink and food cartons

No coffee cups, tissues, food or drink. If in doubt, leave it out! Any BIG cardboard should be folded / flat packed and placed near the bins.

2. Paper and card

If there is no specific paper recycling bin, use the mixed recycling bin.

3. Food waste

  • Any food scraps (fruit, vegetables, meat etc.)
  • Teabags (if plastic free)
  • Coffee grounds

Remember, no coffee cups OR tissues. The packaging in which the food comes in does not count so dispose of this separately.

4. General waste

  • Everything leftover that currently can't be recycled e.g. plastic film, tissues, crisp packets, etc.

5. Small electrical

Items such as mobile phones, headphones, cables, plugs etc. can be recycled in your halls at reception and on campus at SAW and CBG.

6. Batteries

Our boxes found in residence halls receptions, CBG and SAW accept the following kinds:

  • 6V
  • D, C, AA, AAA
  • 9V
  • Button cell batteries (e.g., those in watches or small electronics)

7. Vapes

You can find recycling tubs for these at residence halls' receptions, CBG and SAW.

Let's keep items that can be recycled out of landfill so we can better reduce and reuse!
