Trying Roast Dinners in London

Three great Sunday roast options around halls!

Enjoying a Sunday roast dinner is a ritual in British culture dating back to the reign of King Henry VII. Sunday roasts are meant to be shared among friends and family, so why not try one this holiday season in London?

This article reviews three roast dinners: a traditional Sunday roast from Dirty Dicks, the Wetherspoons Christmas turkey special, and a homemade roast cooked with friends in halls.

Dirty Dicks Sunday Roast

Cost: £23.50

Dirty Dicks is a gorgeous pub on Liverpool Street, located closest to Lilian Knowles House and Butler's Wharf. The best parts of this roast dinner include its high-quality meat and vegetables, as well as the pub's cozy atmosphere. The roast dinners at Dirty Dicks are only served on Sundays in their upstairs dining room. My friends and I loved the vintage decor and wallpaper in this room.

Despite being the most expensive roast dinner on my list, this Sunday roast is fairly reasonably priced compared to others in London (£18-25). If you're looking for a special pub in central London where you can order a beautiful roast and celebrate the end of term with your friends, Dirty Dicks should be at the top of your list!

Wetherspoons Christmas Turkey Special

Cost: £15.99 with soft drink, £17.61 with alcoholic drink

By now, you're probably familiar with the magic of Wetherspoons. As a spoons fan, I was really excited to try their limited edition Christmastime menu. This roast meal, called "sliced turkey breast with winter vegetables," is available every day from now until December 31.

While I was not impressed with the quality of the turkey breast in this meal, the flavor of the mashed potatoes, winter vegetables, and gravy really stood out. I love the variety of festive foods included in this meal, like pigs in blankets and cranberry sauce. You really do get a lot of food on this plate. I had enough leftovers to take home for later!

Being from the United States, his meal really reminds me of Thanksgiving dinner because it features turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce. If you're from the U.S. and find yourself feeling homesick on November 28, take yourself to Wetherspoons for a yummy festive meal.

Homemade Roast Dinner

Cost: About £6 per person, splitting groceries four ways

One of the most fun ways to enjoy a roast is to cook one with your friends in halls! Recently, my friends and I got together to spend the day cooking and listening to Christmas music.

Here's a shopping list for making a roast at home:

  • A meat or vegetarian protein option
  • Potatoes
  • Carrots (or any vegetables of your choice)
  • Yorkshire puddings
  • Gravy
  • Seasonings (of your choice)

My friends and I also made some mulled wine to enjoy while cooking our roast!

If you're looking for a cost-effective way to enjoy a Sunday roast, I definitely recommend making one at home. It's a super fun way to relax and spend some quality time with your friends.
