Eating a balanced diet can sometimes feel like a challenge. One of the most important nutrients to keep you fuelled is protein, but how much do you really need? Let’s break it down.
How much protein should you eat?
The UK Food Standards Agency (FSA) recommends the following daily protein intake:
- Males: 55.5g per day
- Females: 45.0g per day
If you’re eating three meals a day and one snack, this means aiming for:
- Males: 15-25g protein per meal, plus 5-10g in snacks
- Females: 12-20g protein per meal, plus 5-10g in snacks
Why is protein important?
Protein isn’t just for gym-goers, it’s essential for keeping you full, maintaining energy levels and supporting muscle repair (even if your workout is just carrying your laptop to the library). Whether you're vegan, vegetarian or a meat-eater, getting enough protein can help with:
- Focus
- Immune support
- Overall well-being
Where can you get protein at LSE Halls?
At LSE Halls, we cater to all dietary preferences, ensuring you get balanced, nutritious meals daily. Whether you're after classic options or plant-based protein sources, we’ve got you covered. Some great protein-rich choices include:
- Breakfast: Greek yoghurt, eggs, peanut butter on toast, porridge with seeds
- Lunch & dinner: Lentil curries, tofu stir-fries, grilled chicken, chickpea salads, fish dishes
- Snacks: Hummus with wholemeal pitta, nuts, protein bars, boiled eggs
Adjusting for your lifestyle
Your protein needs can change based on how active you are. If you hit the gym regularly or play sports, you might want to aim for the higher end of the protein range per meal. On the other hand, if your activity level is low, sticking to the baseline should be just fine.
