How Your Halls of Residence are Doing on Energy – And How You Can Help!

Have you ever wondered how much energy your hall of residence uses? Well, we’ve got some interesting data for you to look at, showing how the electric and gas usage has changed from 2023 to 2025. Some halls are on a roll with energy savings, while others need a little extra push. Let’s break it down and see what you can do to make a difference in your hall!

The Stats: Year-on-Year Energy Usage Comparison

Here’s a quick look at how each hall is performing in terms of electricity and gas usage over the last couple of years:

Hall  Electric (%) Change vs 2023 Gas  (%) Change vs 2024
Bankside +90% +1%
Butler’s Wharf -8% -26%
Carr Saunders +5% -4%
High Holborn +3% -23%
Passfield Hall +18% -15%
Rosebery -7% -9%

What's Going On?

Bankside Hall: Big Spender
  • Usage: +90% from 2023 to 2025. That’s a massive increase! There’s a lot more electricity being used, so keep an eye out for high energy-consuming appliances.
  • Tip for Change: Try turning off lights when you leave a room and unplugging appliances when not in use. Even small changes can help bring this number down.

Butler’s Wharf: A Little Drop

  • Usage: A small dip of -8% from 2023, and a bigger dip in gas consumption of -26% from 2024. It’s holding steady, but it’s important to stay mindful of any new habits that could be increasing usage.
  • Tip for Change: Maybe keep an eye on any new electronics or appliances being used more often and think about your hot water consumption

Carr Saunders: A Small Increase

  • Usage: A slight rise of +5% from 2023 for electric, and a small dip -4% for gas from 2024. There’s room for improvement, but at least it’s not a drastic change!
  • Tip for Change: Keep turning off those appliances and switch of heaters now the weather is warming up

High Holborn: Green Warriors

  • Usage: A whopping -23% drop from 2024. That means you were using a lot of gas last year, but not so much now which is amazing.
  • Tip for Change: Keep up the good work and share the tips for success.

Passfield Hall: A Rise, But Still Manageable

  • Usage: +21% from 2023 for electric and -15% from 2024 for gas. Looks like electricity usage is climbing here, but it’s still not an out-of-control increase.
  • Tip for Change: Try to unplug things like chargers or kettles when you’re not using them. And don’t forget—cutting back on the use of heated devices like hair straighteners can make a big difference!

Rosebery Hall: A Little Drop

  • Usage: -7% drop from 2024, but an -9% rise in gas from 2024. It’s bouncing around, so maybe some adjustments could help stabilise things.
  • Tip for Change: Encourage your hall mates to be conscious of how much electricity is used in communal areas—think lights, shared fridges, and kitchen appliances.
