Picture this: it’s 2am, a fire alarm is ringing through your halls, and the on-call warden needs to reach you and every other resident in the next sixty seconds. Whose number is on file? If it’s still your number from home, you might not hear it in time. Here’s why it matters to get a UK number and how to fix it in 5 minutes. 

It’s More than “Just a Phone Number”

Moving to a new country doesn’t always mean your life switches all at once. Your bank card works, your passport is still valid, and your confident that your old phone number rings, right? This is not always the case. If you’re using a phone number that doesn’t connect reliably here because of poor signal or you turn off roaming to save money, the message might not arrive in time on your phone, especially when every second counts in an emergency situation.

How to Fix It When Your Arrive

Well the great news is that you don’t need to buy a new phone or throw away your old sim. You just need a UK number that’s:

• Active and reachable while you’re in halls
• Linked to your student record, so it’s the number wardens and LSE systems actually use.
  
• Something you’ll actually answer, and not a backup line you never check
  

Option A: A UK physical SIM card. Pay-as-you go SIM from a UK provider such as Giffgaff, Three, EE, Vodafone, O2 are all common choices among students with available discounts. It may arrive free by post or cost a few pounds in a shop. Insert it into an available phone slot or swap it if your phone only takes one SIM.

Option B: An eSIM - A digital SIM built into your phone's hardware — there's no physical card to insert, lose, or crack. If you're juggling a home number and a UK one, this is usually the smoothest route, and here’s how it works:

Option C: Dual-SIM or SIM-free plans. Many modern phones support a physical SIM. And an eSIM simultaneously. This means you can keep your original number for Whatsapp, banking apps, and calls home, while your UK number handles everything else.

Having a UK number in your pocket won’t help if the university doesn’t know about it. This is the step people forget and that actually matters.

• Log in to your LSE student portal (LSE for You).
• Find your personal details or contact information section.
  
• Update your mobile number field with your new UK number.
  
• Save, then double check it's saved.
