Feeling stuck wearing the same outfits but running on a tight student budget? Thinking of where to shop? Don’t worry! Here is a guide to shop smart!
1. Primark
Although the clothing quality might not be the best compared to rival premium brands, Primark is one of the most budget-friendly stores you should not miss out on. You can find trendy outfits to class like jeans, cardigans and knitwear and comfy loungewear like pyjamas and t-shirts. Thinking of layering in autumn and winter weather? There are coats, jackets and other accessories at a cheap price for you to explore!
2. TK Maxx
You can find a wide range of trusted branded items, from coats and down jackets to handbags and shoes, at discounted prices. It is easy to browse for good quality clothing and footwear that fit you as they are categorised by size. Even though they are mostly not from the latest collections, you might find some hidden gems at a great bargain! If you are petite, don’t overlook the kids’ section, it might surprise you at an even lower price.
3. Charity shop
Buying preloved clothing from a charity shop not only saves you a penny, it is also a good way to help the environment by reducing waste. However, if you see something you love, check properly to know if there are any imperfections and make sure you are aware of them. Check the price online too, if a preloved item costs close to a new one, think twice before buying. In London, Camden High Street has several charity shops, such as the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Rokit. If you prefer vintage style or unique clothing, Google charity shops near your area and check them out!
4. Online Marketplace
If you are a big fan of online shopping, don’t miss out on online platforms like Vinted, Depop and eBay. These platforms are easy to navigate and offer both brand-new and second-hand pieces from various sellers. Make sure you communicate with the sellers by asking questions and requesting additional pictures to verify the item's condition. Check the sizing carefully so that the items meet your expectations and fit you perfectly.
5. Clearance or Sales Section at Physical Stores
Check out the “reduced to clear” or sales section in stores like Uniqlo, H&M, Mountain Warehouse, Sports Direct or any retail outlets. Go to the fitting room and try them on. Shopping in person allows you to try sizes and feel the fabric to ensure a better fit.
Sales might tempt you to buy more. Remember, don’t buy things you don’t need because they are cheap. Avoid impulse purchases, or you might end up overspending. Happy shopping!
