London’s skyline is probably one of the most stunning in the world. It is a perfect mix of historic charm and modern architecture. However, where can you enjoy views of the London skyline without making a dent in your student budget? Here are five of the best completely free viewpoints in London.
1. Alexandra Palace
Also known as “Ally Pally”, Alexandra Palace is a beautiful historic spot located on a hill in North London. This place offers panoramic city views while being distant from the chaos of the city. From here, you can spot many of the iconic London structure such as the Gherkin and the Shard. I would recommend going here at sunset to see London's skyline lit up in golden hues. Moreover, you can enjoy a relaxing picnic in the surrounding park while enjoying the sunset.
2. Tate Modern - Level 10
If you're interested in not just city views but also art and culture, this option is perfect for you. The Tate Modern hosts world-class exhibitions and offers free admission. After exploring its extensive collection, head up to Level 10 of the Blavatnik Building. There, you’ll be welcomed by a beautiful view across the Thames, with St. Paul’s Cathedral at the centre, surrounded by iconic London skyscrapers. With this spot, you get the best of both worlds – culture and skyline in one visit.
3. Royal Observatory Greenwich
Located inside Greenwich Park, right by the Royal Observatory (home of the Prime Meridian), you’ll find one of London’s most iconic viewpoints. It combines rich history with amazing views over the Thames, Canary Wharf, and the skyline beyond. It’s the perfect spot if you want to explore Greenwich as well – you can wander through the park, visit Greenwich Market and marvel at the artwork inside the Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College. Even if you don’t enter the Observatory, the view from just outside is completely free.
4. Sky Garden
Located at the top of the famous “Walkie Talkie” building (20 Fenchurch Street), Sky Garden combines nature and cityscape in the most aesthetic and calming way possible. Once you enter, you’ll be surrounded by lush tropical plants alongside panoramic views of London. It’s a fantastic place to watch the sunset or take a peaceful break from studying. There are cafés if you want to treat yourself, but the garden and views are completely free. However, keep in mind that you’ll need to book your spot well in advance.
5. Horizon 22
This spot has gained a lot of popularity since its opening. Horizon 22 is the city’s highest free public viewing gallery, located on the 58th floor of 22 Bishopsgate. A view from this height is usually hard to come by without a hefty price tag. From 254 metres up, it offers cinematic views of London through floor-to-ceiling glass walls. It’s a bit more modern and polished than other viewpoints, making it a sleek and impressive experience.
