Authentic eats that won't break your student budget

London's food scene tells the story of empire in reverse, where once the city exported its culture to the world, now the world has come to London's kitchens. You will find everything here from Nigerian tapas bars to Ethiopian community feasts. The capital's most exciting flavors aren't found in Michelin-starred dining rooms, but in the neighborhoods where immigrant communities have been quietly revolutionizing what it means to eat well in this city

Chuku’s

Run by sibling duo Emeka and Ifeyinwa, Chuku’s calls itself the world’s first Nigerian tapas bar — and it delivers. Think egusi bowls, plantain waffles, and jollof quinoa, all in small plates you can share. The bright pink interior, Afrobeats soundtrack, and super-welcoming vibe make it more than just dinner. It feels like a family gathering you actually want to show up to.

Maureen’s Kitchen

A true hidden gem. It’s literally Auntie Maureen’s home. Tucked in Brixton, she serves fried chicken, jerk pork, rice & peas, and more from her kitchen and backyard, with a jerk drum smoking away on warm evenings. It’s casual and authentic. One plate and you’ll understand why word travels fast about her cooking.

Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant

For a taste of East Africa, head to Lalibela. It is one of London’s oldest Ethiopian restaurants. Named after the historic town in Ethiopia, it’s known for hearty platters of injera topped with spicy lentils, stews, and perfectly seasoned meat dishes. You eat communally, tearing pieces of injera and sharing plates. So it’s perfect for bringing friends. The vibe is homely, the portions are generous, and if you’ve been missing Ethiopian food, this is the fix.
