Winter Term has officially commenced! Gone are the days of hibernating in our 8X8 flats and enduring the humiliation ritual that is having your umbrella flipped upside down during a windstorm. boygenius listening season is defrosting and outdoor drag brunch season is among us. We usher in this new era with a luxurious one month Spring Break this April! If you’re planning to stay in London this April, and you’re looking for a queer kiki, look no further than the best neighborhood South of the Thames (though as a Robesonite, I admit that I am subject to bias): Peckham.
Peckham boasts some truly wonderful queer locales that are worth the trip. Whether you’re a quick ride on the 21 like those living in Robeson House or Sidney Web House or a tube journey from High Holborn, these spots are definitely worth checking out as Spring Term hurtles toward us.
John the Unicorn🦄
Fancy a cheeky pint and boogie? Look no further than the iconic John The Unicorn in Peckham. Every weekend throughout the Springtime at this legendary Peckham boozer (and I’m talking Thursday-Sunday here because work-life balance is important) has late-night DJ sets, killer cocktail deals, and regular drag performances that will have your jaw on the floor. This queer mainstay promises an evening of cheap thrills with £6 margs, £4 pints, and £6 picantes if you’re feeling spicy. Plus (and this just might be the best part!) late night DJ sets every weekend. If you’re on the London scene, you know that a late-night pub is nothing short of a miracle around these parts where the mainstay pubs (see: spoons) are shutting down before midnight. Not John The Unicorn, though!

GLITCHED005🤖
The Greyhound may look unassuming on the first floor, but there’s more than meets the eye at this old-school British pub. Downstairs, there’s a basement fully decked out with DJ booths, a tight dance floor, and a sophisticated acoustic setup. On Sunday, May 2, The Greyhound is hosting their semi-regular techno-bass event: GLITCHED. This lineup includes DJs like London-based DJ ASHTREY, who credits her music taste to the underground queer rave scene and Bellini, a hyperpop enthusiast who’s committed to genre fluidity. As always, part of the proceeds go to an LGBTQ+ cause; this month, a portion of the funds will be donated to Trans Legal Clinic. This grassroots organization helps trans and non-binary people with housing, discrimination, legal counseling, and access to healthcare.

Democracy Project🗣
For my civically engaged readers, I put forth “UNITE AGAINST the FAR RIGHT: GNDR X GAY SCHOOL X MIGRANT DEMOCRACY PROJECT” hosted by the Peckham Feminist Library. Feeling frustrated and upset with the state of the world? Looking to situate yourself in community during these troubling times? Or are you struggling to find ways to make meaningful difference? Luckily, there is a space for you to feel all those feelings and converse with practitioners about strategies for resistance and hope through a queer lens.

#OOMFNETWORK @ Vespers 🪩
Let’s have a kiki! Feeling in the mood to celebrate the end of term (and, tragically, perhaps looking for a final jaunt before dissertation writing begins to get harrowing)? May I humbly suggest Peckham’s premier queer-owned club, Vespers. Vespers Club, situated centrally on Rye Lane, is worth checking out even if you can’t make this particular event. A queer-owned and operated gem, Vespers offers an intimate but lively experience with a spacious dance floor and electric acoustics.
