When you think of day trips from London, the first places that come to mind are Cambridge, Oxford, Canterbury, etc. However, sometimes those places can be overcrowded or you might have already been to these cities and want to explore a new part of the UK. After all, there are a lot of picturesque and quaint towns near London. Here are some of my suggestions for lesser-known day trip ideas that are less crowded but just as beautiful.
Rye, East Sussex
Getting there: 1 hour 10 minutes by train from St Pancras International (need to change at Ashford)
If you want to feel like you have been transported to a medieval fairy tale, this is the perfect place for you. Vintage tea rooms, adorable souvenir shops, and cobbled streets- the perfect combination for a relaxing yet fun day trip. When visiting Rye, Mermaid Street is a must-visit. It is known as one of the most photographed streets in England. During your time there, you can explore the many independent shops and cafes in Rye, and as Rye is near the coast, you can get charming sunset views from the top of St. Mary’s church before returning to London.
Margate, Kent
Getting there: 1 hour 25 minutes by train from London St Pancras
If you are a foodie and especially enjoy seafood, Margate will satisfy your cravings. This coastal town is known for its food, vintage shops, and arts scene. You can spend your day strolling along the beach, visiting the Old Town, and shopping at vintage stores there. If you love shells, the Shell Grotto will catch your attention- its a passageway where the walls and ceiling are covered in mosaics made entirely of seashells.
Windsor, Berkshire
Getting there: 55 minutes by train from London Waterloo
Windsor, best known for Windsor Castle, also has a unique charm. People who are interested in the British Royal Family would love to visit Windsor Castle. Afterwards, you can take a walk along the Long Walk, which offers stunning views of the castle. To end your day, you could have dinner at one of the many cosy restaurants there. Since Windsor is just less than an hour away from London, it is perfect for a short and sweet day trip.
Lewes, East Sussex
Getting there: 1 hour by train from London Victoria
Lewes is another small town with a medieval charm. It is surrounded by chalk hills and green peaks, making for a unique setting. You can spend the day there exploring Lewes Castle, shop at antique shops, and have brunch at one of many independent cafes. You can also visit Lewes Flea Market if you fancy antique furniture or unique homeware. Lastly, you can end your day with a pint at Harvey’s Brewery, one of the oldest breweries in England.
The New Forest, Hampshire
Getting there: 1 hour 45 minutes by train from London Waterloo
This suggestion is for the nature lovers or if you just want to be surrounded by nature. You can take a walk along their scenic walking trails, or if you prefer biking, you can bike around without having to worry about London Traffic. During your walk, you can explore the village of Lyndhurst and the Hatchet Pond. For more activities, you can also try horse riding or paddleboarding on the Beaulieu River.
So, whether you're into history, art, seaside strolls, vintage shopping, or escaping into nature, there's a perfect day trip on this list just for you!
