Giving Back in London

Black-led projects across London

A lot of us come to London chasing big academic and career goals. But there’s also that pull to give something back while we’re here. Volunteering is one of the easiest ways to do that.

For Black students especially, it can mean more than ticking hours on a form. It’s a chance to stand in solidarity and to connect with people who remind you that London’s Black culture is alive, resilient, and always building.

Brixton Soup Kitchen (South London)

Founded by Solomon Smith in 2013, this space serves free hot meals, runs donation drives, and creates a place of welcome for anyone in need. As a volunteer, you might be serving food, sorting clothes, or simply sitting down for a chat. You don’t need to sign up months in advance, just show up and lend a hand.

Voyage Youth (Hackney & beyond)

Voyage works with young people across London, focusing on empowerment, social justice, and leadership training. Volunteers get involved in tutoring, mentoring, and helping with community programmes. It’s hands-on and deeply rewarding.

Royal African Society (Events & Festivals)

If you love books, film, or culture, the Royal African Society always needs volunteers for its major events: Africa Writes (a festival of African literature) and Film Africa (celebrating African cinema). You could be welcoming guests, helping with logistics, or even supporting social media on the day. It’s a fun way to meet people and be part of celebrating African creativity in the capital.

Find Your Cause

Not sure what you want to do yet? Sites like Do-it.org, CharityJob, or the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) let you filter by interest — youth, environment, arts, healthcare, whatever you care about. Whether you’re tutoring kids, planting trees, or visiting older neighbors, there’s always a London project that needs an extra pair of hands.
