Explore London: 5 Christmas Markets to visit this Winter

Here are some Festive markets not far from LSE halls and campus offering a wide variety of festive street food, shopping and shows🎄

Southbank Winter Market

Located along the Thames near Bankside House & Urbanest, the Southbank Winter Market has plenty of wooden chalets with street food and pop-up bars to enjoy with a city view 🌆

When: 1 November to 26 December 2024

Where: Queen's Walk, Southbank

Entry: Free, no ticket required

What: The Southbank Winter Market offers a wide range of festive street food, including truffle burgers, lobster rolls and Swiss-style raclette. There are also a few stalls selling jewellery, books and handmade gifts.

Christmas in Leicester Square 

As well as hosting 25 huts with Christmas food, drinks and crafts, the Leicester Square Christmas Market is showing La Clique's Olivier Award Winning show, Spiegeltent - perfect for anyone that likes cabaret, circus and a few sequins ✨

When: November 6 2024 to January 5 2025

Where: Leicester Square 

Entry: Free entry to market, but booking needed for shows (£26.50)

What: Christmas in Leicester Square is the perfect opportunity to try some festive food, such as mince pies, Bratwurst and even warm Pimm's! The 25 wooden stalls also have Christmas decorations and artisan food to buy. Christmas in Leicester Square is well known for hosting La Clique's Spiegeltent performance, which is celebrating its 20th year this Winter!

Christmas in Covent Garden 

Only a 10 minute walk away from campus, the Covent Garden Christmas market is a must-visit, even if it's just to admire the Christmas lights at 60ft tree!🎄

When: From 12th November 2024

Where: Covent Garden Piazza, with other festive events happening near Neal's Yard and Seven Dials

Entry: Free, no ticket required 

What: Christmas in Covent Garden is famous for its 60ft Christmas tree and decorations, with over 115,000 colourful lights! The Christmas Village is located in the East Piazza of the market building, where there will be handmade crafts, food and over 25 flavours of mulled wine to try! On 'Festive Thursdays' there will also be dining offers, shopping events and surprise performances to enjoy. There are also hourly snow showers around the piazza, so make sure to time your visit for one of these❄️

King's Cross Christmas Markets 

When: 29th November to 22nd December 2024 

  • 29th November to 1st December - Mexican Christmas Market
  • 6th December to 8th December - Vegan Christmas Market, Canopy Market
  • 12th December to 15th December - Shōtengai pan-Asian Christmas Market 

Where: Canopy Market & Lower Stable Street, Kings Cross 

Entry: Free, no ticket required 

What: King's Cross has plenty going on in the festive period, with Canopy Market hosting lots of festive food and art stalls, and the eco-friendly Lower Stable Street offering lots of homeware and clothing stalls. There will be new art installations in Granary Square, as well as a 50ft Christmas tree in Coal Drops yard to enjoy. They are also running Mexican, Vegan and Pan-Asian themed Christmas markets throughout December, which is a great opportunity to try some new festive food! 🎅

Greenwich Market

Although further from campus, Greenwich makes the perfect afternoon out in London and Winter is the perfect time to visit Greenwich Market. 

When: Market open all year but Christmas celebrations from 20th November 

Where: Greenwich Market 

Entry: Free, no ticket required 

What: Greenwich Market is particularly nice in the Christmas period, and is the perfect place to do some Christmas shopping. The market itself specialises in jewellery, art, fashion and crafts but also has plenty to eat and drink. This year it is staying open late every Wednesday in December and will have carolling for anyone hoping to get into the Christmas spirit! Also noteworthy that Queen's House Ice Rink is only a 4 minute walk away ⛸️
