Day Trips and Movie Nights: Fun Ideas for Your Free Time

Finding the perfect balance between studying and relaxing can be challenging, but using your weekends to relax is just as important as using them to study. So, here are some activities to fill your weekends with new experiences and joy.

1. Day trip to Canterbury

Take a short train ride to escape from the chaotic cityscape to a cute town just outside London. Filled with historical landmarks and nature, Canterbury is the perfect relaxing day trip for you and your friends. You can explore the small shops in the town center, take a relaxing walk in Westgate Gardens, or go punting in River Stour for a quick tour of the town. Canterbury is also home to the oldest church in England: St Martin's Church, which may catch the eye of those interested in England’s history.

2. Explore Greenwich

While you are studying in London, make the most of it and explore London outside of Zone 1 and 2. One of the areas you must visit is Greenwich. There is something to do for everyone. Greenwich Market is a great spot to explore independent shops and try new foods. If you love nature, Greenwich Park is the best place to be and it offers amazing panoramic views of London. For the people who love art and history, visiting the Old Royal Naval College is a must. The painted hall inside will amaze you with its intricate artwork. Lastly, if you love shopping, visit the O2 where there are a plethora of shops and restaurants. To end your visit, take a ride on the IFS Cloud Cable Car at sunset to enjoy London’s skyline.

3. Escape Room

Looking for a fun but short activity to do with your friends? Escape rooms offer just that. Test your detective skills while having a good laugh with your friends. There are so many themes you can choose from as well: murder mystery, haunted house, missing person, secret mission, etc. Furthermore, there are many escape rooms located near campus. This is a good activity to do for groups of 4 to 8.

4. An evening walk along the Thames

Living in London, the city may start appearing more bland as you get used to life here. However, it is important to appreciate the beauty of it from time to time. A wonderful and healthy way to do this is to take a walk along the river while chatting with your friends and admiring London’s famous landmarks like Big Ben, Tower Bridge, and more. It is relaxing and a good way to get your daily steps in.

5. A movie night!

The workload at LSE is not easy, so it is important to relax during the weekend so you can start the new week with a fresh mind and prevent burnout. One of the best ways to do this is by watching a movie with your friends, either at the theatre or in the comfort of your room. In fact, at Urbanest Westminster, there is a movie room open to all residents with a big projector screen, make the best use of the facilities at your halls!

These were just some suggestions for weekend activities, for more unique activities and ideas, I suggest following Secret London on social media for the newest things happening in London.
