How to get into a Christmassy vibe in London

Music, plays & events

I celebrate Christmas, so that’s what I’m most knowledgeable about in terms of seasonal cultural activities in London. Here’s just a few!

Lots of wonderful plays and music on over the holidays

  • Elf – one of my favourite goofy holiday movies, is on now as a musical: https://elflondon.com/
  • A Christmas Carol is the story about the heartless curmudgeon Scrooge, but it has a happy ending 😊There are at least 3 versions on right now in London, but it is on now at a favourite theatre, the Old Vic. This year, I’ve decided to see it at a brand-new state-of-the-art theatre, the Bridge Theatre . Great seats at both for around £15-£20! And both theatres within easy walking distance from Sidney Webb.
  • One of the loveliest Christmas concerts happens every year in the Royal Albert Hall, Handel’s Messiah, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. You can get cheap seats (in the rafters), but there really aren’t any bad seats in this spectacular concert hall.

After seeing this concert every year for the last several years, I’m changing it up this year as the Barbican Centre is also offering Handel’s Messiah with the Academy of Ancient Music (and it’s less expensive than the Royal Albert Hall and a bit more intimate venue): https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2022/event/academy-of-ancient-music-handels-messiah

Christmas Carols

And, if you REALLY like A Christmas Carol (written by Charles Dickens, based on London landmarks), this looks like a ton of fun! A walking tour of all the places mentioned in the book…I think I’ll do this one in December https://www.london-walking-tours.co.uk/dickens-london/a-christmas-carol-locations.htm

I could mention so many other places and events, but not enough space here! If you want more suggestions, email me at the Subwarden inbox: Sidneywebb.Subwarden@lse.ac.uk and I will try to give you more ideas!
