To many, music is the language of the heart.

It relaxes tension and facilitates wellbeing, by releasing negative emotions and creating flow experience. Over the break, you may be busy working on summative assignments and preparing for January exams; however, do not forget to relax from time to time, as rest and balance is the key to sustain for the long run. In this regard, music appreciation might be one of the ways to help your relax, refresh and recharge.

During the Christmas and New Year period, music is one of the highlights in the city of London. Depending on your cultural background and musical taste, the following performances may add a little sparkle to your break.

If you want to explore and experience Christmas music from a religious perspective and in a relatively grand, solemn way, Carol service at St. Paul's is probably a good option. Appreciating the vibrancy, expansion and transparency of human singing voice, which interacts with the spacious and grandiose architectural structure of the cathedral could be a rewarding experience. You could also take this opportunity to tour around St. Pauls and to explore its history.

If you fancy a modern touch of Christmas music, which includes but not limits to modern carols,  jazz, film tunes and musicals, Christmas music programme at the Royal Albert Hall is something you do not want to miss! Over the course of Christmas to new year, there are different programs catered for people of different musical tastes and community needs. Check it out, and you may be able to find something special for yourself!

Swingy Christmas songs with a soft, delicate yet deeply moving touch is certainly one of my personal favourites. If you want to experience this melting, magical musical experience in live-performance, there are certain swing bands and orchestras on tour in London. In the above YouTube Video, I am sharing the touring information of the Down for the Count Orchestra. However, there are also local bands performing in restaurants and cultural spaces in different areas in London. Do some research – you may be able to find one in your neighbourhood.

Sometimes big music concert and performance could be relatively overwhelming, considering the crowd and possibly traffic! A smaller size concert with a classical, calmer touch might create a more serene experience. The Wigmore Hall is hosting ensemble Christmas music that you might want to consider.

Lastly, you do not have to join any performance or concert, if you do not want to! Everyone is different and you know what works the best for you and helps your relax. If you fancy staying at home, creating your own Christmas music playlist and enjoying it with a cup of hot chocolate could also be a nice, relaxing experience!
