Butler’s Wharf and Sidney Webb House

Since I moved into Sidney Webb in September, I have spent some of my free time (when not writing these blogs) exploring the local areas. Markets were visited, burgers were eaten, walls were climbed, and drinks were consumed. I now present you an official guide, creatively titled “Cool stuff to do near(ish) to Butler’s Wharf and Sidney Webb House”.

Borough Market

Okay, you’ve probably been here already. If you haven’t, you must check it out as a priority. Borough Market is mostly a massive food market, tucked away behind Southwark Cathedral just by London Bridge. You can get delicious groceries, street food, pints, coffee and more. I would 10/10 would recommend a venison burger (especially for those omnivores who favour sustainable meat).

There are also lots of little quirky stalls where you can source gifts for loved ones…or yourself. I bought two small bowls for Christmas pressies for a #bargain. 

Maltby Street Market

I lured you in with Borough Market, but have you have been to Maltby Street Market? No? I knew it! This is a tiny market in comparison to Borough Market, but just as worth a visit. It’s an outdoor weekend street market with a huge mix of food stalls, tiny restaurants, a bakery, weird shops and more. What’s more it’s nestled next to huge Victorian railway arches. In other words, you are guaranteed a good pic for Instagram (other social media platforms are available).

Building One, Bermondsey, The Arch Climbing Wall

Have you ever felt you wanted to scale some climbing walls? I visited Building One earlier this month. It is safe to say I am not Spiderman. However, trying out climbing was super fun!

There are tons of different climbs, with varying levels of difficulty. In total there are 280 set problems (a nice break from those problem sets for those of you on quant courses). As well as this there is a 40m traverse wall (I found this far harder than climbing upwards). If you’re serious there are also pull up boards, fingerboards, and so many other boards that I have no idea how to describe them. You certainly won’t get bored there. (Sorry.)

I would 10/10 recommend going with a friend and spending half a day there. You can hire shoes for £3.50 and there’s a student special £5 Day Pass every Monday and Friday.

The Old School Yard

Inevitably, during my ambles around the local area I developed a distinct thirst. On one occasion, the night was closing in. Ahead in the distance, I saw a blue, red, and yellow sign that read ‘The Old School Yard’. It was a like an oasis in a sandy desert…I knew I had to venture inside.

In short: the Old School Yard is a funky bar with a karaoke room. Great place for a quick drink or to spend a whole evening. 10/10 would recommend.
