The 2023-24 academic year at LSE witnessed an inspiring drive towards sustainability through the Halls Life campaign. This initiative, which aimed to cultivate lifelong sustainable living habits among students, proved to be both impactful and engaging!
Student Engagement and Impact
The campaign reached a substantial portion of the student body, with 916 students (44% of the total residents) actively participating. Among them, 61 students volunteered, showing a commendable commitment to sustainability. The campaign also encouraged participation through various activities, including climate quizzes, online competitions, masterclasses, and webinars, which drew in 312 participants. Furthermore, 556 students engaged in campus visits, enhancing their practical understanding of sustainability.
Energy and Carbon Footprint Reduction
One of the campaign's notable achievements was the significant reduction in energy consumption. Over the course of 90 days, the campaign helped save 500,258 kWh of electricity, equating to 116 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided. This marks a 38% reduction in energy usage compared to the baseline year of 2019/20, demonstrating the potential of collective action in driving positive environmental outcomes.
However, there was a slight increase in energy use by 3% in some areas, primarily due to a 9% rise from Rosebery. This highlights areas where further improvements can be targeted in future campaigns.
Volunteer Involvement and Training
Volunteers played a pivotal role in the campaign's success. They received training that introduced them to sustainability concepts, the climate crisis, and social justice issues. These sessions equipped them with skills to audit their halls and promote sustainable practices among their peers. In recognition of their efforts, volunteers were awarded digital badges and had the opportunity to apply for microgrants to further sustainability initiatives within their residences.
National Achievements
On a national scale, the campaign reached 59,770 students and saved an impressive 983,017 kWh of electricity, equating to 227 tonnes of CO₂. This national effort underscores the collective impact of student-led initiatives on reducing carbon footprints and promoting sustainability across university campuses.
Looking Forward
The Halls Life campaign has set a strong foundation for future sustainability efforts at LSE. With plans to continue and expand these initiatives in the 2024-25 academic year, the campaign organizers are eager to explore new program elements and engage even more students in sustainable living practices. The continued collaboration between students, staff, and sustainability advocates promises to drive meaningful change and inspire future generations to prioritize environmental stewardship.
In conclusion, the 2023-24 Halls Life campaign not only advanced LSE's sustainability goals but also empowered students to take actionable steps towards a more sustainable future. As students develop their skills and understanding, the campaign's legacy will likely resonate beyond the university, influencing broader societal attitudes toward environmental responsibility.
